Dear Grace,

Hi Dr Cat,

Thanks for the quick response! Great info and recommendations!

I really liked that you mentioned the Philippines... definitely off the beaten path.

I had come across Amanpulo years ago and thought it'd be a wonderful place to visit. Yeah... know exactly what you mean about Aman resorts. But then.. you get what you pay for as with most things in life! There's one newer Aman in the US.. in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, a mountain retreat as opposed to a beach resort, which's another one of my dream places for vacation!

Re: Phuket.. I had heard of the Racha Resort.. may be the one you were thinking of? I think it's very close to what I have in mind. The only concern is the transfer... looks like it requires both car/boat transfer to/from the airport.

I will definitely look up the places you mentioned. I'll probably stop by soon to ask you more questions.. hope you don't mind sharing more of your expert knowledge!

Btw, your English is excellent.. perfectly grammatical. But of course you can respond in Chinese. I can read but typing Chinese is another story... :)

Please post more pics of baby Cat. He's simply Darling!

Dear QP,
Sorry for being late to respond this message.
There is only one Racha resort on "Racha island", and I think we are talking about the same place. It requires both car/boat transfer to/from the airport, but the hotel or travel agencies will arrange the transfer for you.
I haven't been to Amanpulo, but it's one of the places that I want to go most. Since you have been there, choosing another island is a better idea. Were it not for being over-developed, I would recommend Boracay. It's more suitable for party animals now, though the sceneries are still so charming...

Hi Dr. Cat,

First of all, happy new year! Saw pictures of your son in your recent post. What an adorable boy!

I'm planning to be in TW in Dec during the holidays and figure that I should take the opportunity to also visit a place in Asia.

I've never been to the Maldives but it's always been my dream destination. I would've visited already had it been closer to the US..

With that said, what beach destination in the southeast asia would you recommend? I think most would say Bali or Phuket..

Of the beach/island destinations I've been, I like the Yucatan Pennisula the best (Mexico) while most Americans prefer the Hawaiian islands. Strangely enough, I feel little connection to the islands when I visited.

I'd certainly prefer a quieter spot with white sand beach.... I'm a sucker for white sand beaches! :)

Please let me know your thoughts and I'd certainly like to plan ahead and do as much research as I can.

Thanks!

Dear QP,

Happy new year to you, too. My life has changed a lot after the "adorable boy" joined our family. Although we can't travel freely like before, we got some different kind of happiness.

Speaking of the white sand beaches in southeast asia, Bali is definitely not in my list. It's a good place for relaxation and enjoying the very luxury villas and seafood cuisines, but the beach in Bali is just soso.

Some beaches in Phuket are great, such as Phiphi island and Racha island. There is a nice resort in the Racha, which may be suitable for you. As for Phiphi island, I am not quite sure the hotels' conditions after the tsunami, you can do some survey if you'd like to go there.

However, I personally will recommend the Philippines if you realy like white sands. Amanpulo (Palawan, Philippines) has the best white sand beach in southeast asia and is comparable to Maldives (even better!) The only problem is $$$ since it's an Aman resort.

Boracay(Philippines) is also famous for it's white sands. It had been in the list of top 10 beaches in the world (by Discovery Channel). I had been there 12 years ago, the views and the beaches were just fantastic. But in recent years, too many tourists and new resorts make it a crowded island. Though the view is still nice, the relaxing atmosphere is losing gradually. Hotel rates in Boracay are not so expensive and you have a wide range of choices to decide where to stay.

Another good place with beautiful white beaches in Philippines is El Nido. We've been there few years ago. I've shared some information in this blog. Please refer to the link below for more information.

In summary, if budget is not a problem, Amanpulo may be the best choice for you ~ wonderful beaches and not far (from Taiwan). If your budget is limited, the Racha or Phiphi in Phuket island or El Nido, Boracay, Palawan in Philippines are also good choices.

Hope you can understand my poor English ;)
